Towards S4 and interregional innovation investments in the Baltic Sea region
Supported by EUSBSR Policy Area Innovation, sub-regions in the Baltic Sea region are actively developing their smart specialisation (S3) strategies in line with the EU Green Deal and with increasing focus on interregional cooperation. Some recent developments, based on the outcomes of BSR S3 Ecosystem platform project, are outlined in this article.

Macroregional innovation cooperation on circular bioeconomy
Different BSR interregional projects have helped to reinforce cooperation around e.g. key bio-circular value chains throughout the macro-region. Supported by a new interregional governance arrangement - the ‘BSR S3 Directors’ Network’ - a stronger, sustainable footing for macro-regional S3 can be realised.

Laying the foundations for a BSR S3 Ecosystem: New reports out on circular bioeconomy value chains and S3 in BSR
A number of significant outputs have been generated, through an EUSBSR PA INNO flagship, BSR S3 ecosystem project, over the last year with the aim of building stronger, more resilient and place-based capacity across the BSR for improved innovation collaboration and performance. Three interesting and topical reports, a BSR circular bioeconomy value chain mapping report and related guidance manual, and a BSR S3 good practice report, are now available.

Active period of Flagships' implementation, S3 Ecosystem development and EUSBSR revision work ongoing in PA INNO

The Baltic Institute of Finland is the new coordinator of the Policy Area Innovation of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region
In their meeting in Copenhagen on 26 September, the National Coordinators of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) appointed the Baltic Institute of Finland (BIF) as the new coordinator of the EUSBSR Policy Area Innovation.

Regions take positive steps towards creation of Baltic Sea Smart Specialisation Strategy Ecosystem
Regional actors and Policy Area Innovation expressed their collective ambition to create a macro-regional Smart Specialisation Strategy ecosystem at the 9th Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
